Facebook’s Non-Compliance with Canadian Privacy Laws

â€Å"The world of privacy has changed, and Canada’s laws need to keep up. Personal information has been called the oil of the digital economy and as companies drill for more data, the risk to privacy are growing exponentially.† After an investigation conducted in 2009 prompted by a complaint filed from the Canadian Policy and Public Interest Clinic, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner has concluded that Facebook’s current practices of third party applications do not comply with Canadian Privacy Laws. The Commissioner’s concerns include inadequate disclosure to users about what is being disclosed, lack of consent, and lack of control over personal information with third-party developers. With these findings, the Commissioner has proposed several recommendations for Facebook to take on, however the company has refused to comply. In this paper I will argue that the Office of Privacy Commission requires stronger enforcement powers in ordering Facebook to change its third party application practices in order to effectively protect consumers personal information. â€Å"We live in a regulatory state. The analysis of feminist theory in Things Fall Apart presents reason for the sexism that is continuously portrayed. Sexism and problematic gender roles within the novel are repeatedly depicted throughout a number of scenes and characters. With this, we are able to see how sexism exists in various cultures and how the implementation of sexism is detrimental to society. Rockabye Brecht Essay Shortly before his death in 1956, Bertolt Brecht, in a characteristic moment of reflective irony, told a colleague that the man who makes himself indispensable is up to no good. A lifetime behind him of skipping town whenever indispensable leaders such as Hitler and the House on Un-American Activities Committee were hot on his trail, Brecht could have been musing about his transience as a permanent condition. It would be like him to recognize that even his own leadership of the Berliner Ensemble could be construed as a threat to the survival of his plays, their reputation hanging on the slender thread of his own impeccable, highly impermanent productions. For all the critical literature surrounding both plays and productions, and even considering the mile-high paper trail he constructed to explain himself, its not easy to know if he saw himself as a profound classical contender. He was too street-smart to float pretensions of greatness, even though he couldnt resist the marketplace f or high-falutin ideas. As early as 1934, he was telling Walter Benjamin that hed have to admit to a tribunal asking him if he meant to be serious that he was finally, after all, thinking too much about artistic matters, about what would go well on stage, to be quite serious. That paper trail notwithstanding, Brecht the playwright was always ready to defer to Brecht the director. He had to know, too, that both Brechts would eventually defer to history. What a charming fatalist he turned out to be, living next door in East Berlin to the bucolic little graveyard where he and Helena Weigel would eventually be buried their bodies and souls dedicated to theatrical experiment, their bank notes stashed in Zurich just in case another quick getaway would have to be made. In Galileo, he had already pronounced his own death sentence on sentimental heroics Unhappy the country that needs a hero and he was quick to see that if the East German scoundrels persisted in medieval despotism, the people might have to be abolished. BUT EVEN BRECHT, with all his mightily wry skepticism, could not have written 1989s scenario of the Berlin Walls collapse, nor the subsequent madcap dash into free-market freefall, tribal warfare, factional terrorism and designer bombings meant to boost the popularity of Americas home-grown Arturo Uis. Mother Courages 30-year war looks positively innocent now compared to ethnic cleansings on all continents. And what could be funnier and more dialectically mysterious than the recent serious proposal from retailer Luciano Benetton to set up a revolutionary kind of school without teacher or books for young artists from around the world, to be headed by Fidel Castro? Epic theatre, whatever it may have meant to Brecht, has long since been upstaged by apocalyptic tragi-comedy. According to John Rockwells New York Times account last February about small-scale epic efforts by Brechts theatrical heirs to rescue the Berliner Ensemble now that all the indispensables are gone, it was Heiner Muller who told him that theyre looking for a constructive idea, thus inadvertently putting the final seal on Brechts theories as a means to any useful end. Muller, of course, is currently besieged by charges that he, like so many accommodating intellectuals, did a deal with Erich Honekers Stasi devils, so its no wonder that hes not exactly concentrating for the moment on running a theatre. Even so, he might have done better service to his own intelligence and Brechts than the hapless admission that hes nostalgic for those great days when they didnt have the great burden that we can do anything and say anything. A terrible burden, also, to be handling a $16-million annual subsidy from the Berlin city government; its not likely, however, that Berliners on either side of the former wall are shedding tears for an unfocused playwright as they scramble to survive more pressing emergencies, such as currency panic and reminiscent violence. Rockwell defines epic theatre as sweeping pageants built of socially concerned vignettes, placing Brecht in the most trivializing ghetto he can find, but monstrous injustice as this may be, its not more injurious to Brecht than Mullers sweeping unconcern. Brecht, I suspect, would have abolished his heirs before abolishing the people. American theatre of the Seven Years War by 1763? EssayPuntila and Matti at the Odyssey Theatre in Los Angeles last spring seemed to be about a rich geezer and the hands-on-hips broads he needed when drunk or sober, thus blurring all the contrasts. Theyre struck noisily dumb, if thats possible, by the musical episodes, the ghosts of jaunty-Weill and swaggering Lenya rendering them sunless, arch and weirdly melancholic. GIVEN TIME, THEN, our directors might be able to break away from the dead hand of received ideas. But why bother, even if the luxury were suddenly dumped on us as reward for so many years spent like street-buskers waiting for a handout? My guess is that Brechts plays, punch-drunk with wicked reversals, besotted linguistic effusions and rage with a stupid universe, are not so much beyond translation as they are beside themselves with grief about the disappearing urgency of theatre itself. Alive today, Brecht the poet could easily make peace with the gods that failed. He might even be able to cope with the headlines and all the infuriating cruelties surrounding them. And in George Soros, described this summer by a Reuters dispatch as the Hungarian-born modern-day Robin Hood who broke the pound, hed surely find still another irresistibly slippery character settling for a spectacular role on the world stage of finance and war. But surely thats the point: How do we tell this new Azdak that Brecht has already written him? Hell go on anyway, maneuvering behind the scenes, making a mockery of the experts, generally demonstrating that the world doesnt need parliaments, prime ministers, presidents, pundits or playwrights. As a certifiable Brecht character, hes always momentarily right and monumentally wrong. The playwright needs to regroup forces now, if only to catch up with that quick-change art known as history. Until we can look at him again as a new-born prodigy, always a fleet-foot ahead of the undertakers running the world, lets give Brecht a well-earned rest from slow-wit and lumpish production. Long after Soros and Company are gone, Brecht, like Beckett, will go on.

Cults On November 18, 1978, in a cleared-out patch of the Guyanese jungle, Reverend Jim Jones ordered the 911 members of his flock to kill themselves by drinking a cyanide potion, and they did. It seems cultists were brainwashed by this megalomaniac Jones, who had named their jungle village after himself and held them as virtual slaves, if not living zombies. Jones himself was found dead. He'd shot himself in the head, or someone else had shot him. Is it plausible that more than nine hundred people took their own lives willingly, simply because he told them to? This paper will examine aspects of certain religious groups around the world that have shocked us with similar types of behavior. Most of these groups have been categorized into what we refer to as cults. While most of these new religious groups are extremely passive in their methodology, it is my objective to look at those that have gone outside the boundaries of our norms and done such things as mass suicide and acts of terrorism. I will try to understand how the leaders of these groups are able to persuade members to give up all of their possessions and in some cases their lives. What causes people to remove themselves from their jobs, and families? A cult is any group of people who surround themselves around a strong authority figure. Cults, like many other groups, attempt to expand their influence for the purposes of power or money. However, to achieve these ends, destructive cults employ a potent mixture of influence and deception over members and new recruits. Using methods such as brainwashing, thought reform, and mind control. A successful conversion into a destructive cult removes a person's former identity and replaces it with a new one. This is where the new member accepts all of the beliefs of his new group and a new identity is created. However once a member of the group, any deviation from the cult leader's teachings is strictly forbidden. Individuality is suppressed, and subject to fear and suspicion of everyone around in the group. What could cause people to join such groups when it is common knowledge that these groups are known to go against the norms of our society? Many of those who study these groups say that people tend to be more susceptible to manipulation in times of major change and crisis. During the 1960s there was an explosion of these new religious groups such as the Hare Krishna and Transcendental Meditation. A decade later, the human potential movement emerged, teaching self-awareness and consciousness expansion. Groups with self-styled s like Charles Manson, David Koresh, and Marshall Applewhite have flourished, teaching impending doom, using mixtures from Christianity, millennialism and even science fiction. Most of those who join these groups, do not join them with the intention of becoming a cultist, they are usually seeking a new religious group, or a self-help group, looking for some improvement in their lives. It is the group that they join that play on the individuals insecurities and giving them some sense of order and a reason for their existence in the world. There have been many religious groups that have caught the medias attention with their deviant behavior such as the members of Jonestown. Here are some other examples that will illustrate the complete dominance that the leaders were able to hold over the members of the cult. David Koreshs Religious group, known as the Davidian is one of the more familiar cuts during the past decade. On February 28, 1993, Storm Troopers of the ATF tried to enter the Branch Davidian compound in the outskirts of Waco, Texas, where David Koresh and his followers had set up their haven. The compound was stockpiled with weapons that were to be used for a holy war that the had claimed would be coming soon. David and his followers vowed there would be no surrender. For 51 days there was a standoff between the cult, and the ATF. The doomsday prophet promised to bring forth an apocalypse for all those with him in the compound. Compound Tenses of the French Verb Prendre Prendre, which  primarily means to take both literally and figuratively, is a general, all-purpose verb  thats  one of the most frequently used in the French language. Its conjugation is irregular  in both the simple and compound forms,  although it has a following of other verbs ending in -prendre, such as apprendre (to learn),  that are conjugated in the same way.   Prendre is also found in a number of idiomatic expressions, such as prendre sa retraite  (to retire), prendre une decision (to make a decision) and the informal prendre a pot (to have a drink). Application of dc series motor INTRODUCTION: Ø The essential features of a dc machine are :- Ø The stator has salient poles and is excited by one or more field coil. Ø The air-gap flux distribution created by the field windings is symmetric about the center line of the field poles. This axis is called the field axis or direct axis. Ø The ac voltage generated in each rotating armature coil is converted to dc in the external armature terminals by means of a rotating commutator and stationary brushes to which the armature leads are connected. o The commutator-brush combination forms a mechanical rectifier, resulting in a dc armature voltage as well as an armature-mmf wave which is fixed in space. o The brushes are located so that commutation occurs when the coil sides are in the neutral zone, midway between the field poles. o The axis of the armature-mmf wave is 90 electrical degrees from the axis of the field poles, i.e., in the quadrature axis. o The armature-mmf wave is along the brush axis. DIRECT CURRENT MOTOR A direct current (DC)motoris a simple electricmotorthat uses electricity and amagnetic fieldto produce torque, which turns themotor. A DCmotorrequires two magnets of opposite polarity and an electric coil, which acts as anelectromagnet. The repellent and attractive electromagnetic forces of the magnets provide the torque to theDCmotor. DC motors are divided into three classes, designated according to the method of connecting the armature and the field windings as shunt-series and compound wound.When a permanent magnet is positioned around a loop of wire that is hooked up to a D.C. power source. In order to make the loop of wire spin, we have to connect a battery or DC power supply between its ends, and support it so it can spin about its axis. To allow the rotor to turn without twisting the wires, the ends of the wire loop are connected to a set of contacts called the commutator,which rubs against a set of conductors calledthebrushes.The brushes make electrical contact with the commutator as it spins, andare connected to the positive and negative leads of the power source, allowing electricity to flow through the loop. The electricity flowing through the loop creates a magnetic field that interacts with the magnetic field of the permanent magnet to make the loop spin. DC MOTOR PRINCIPLE An electric motor is a machine which converts electric energy to mechanical energy.Its action is based on the principle that when a current carrying conductor is placed in magnetic field, it experiences a mechanical force whose direction is given by flemming left hand rule and whose magnitude is given by F=BIl newton. Where B is the field strength in teslas, Ic is the current flowing through the conductor in amperes and lc is the length of conductor in meters. WORKING OF DC MOTORS:- When the motor is connected to the dc supply mains, a direct current passes through the brushes and commutator to the armature winding while it passes through the commutator it is converted into ac so that the groups of conductors under successive field poles carry currents in the opposite directions. Also the direction of current in the individual conductors reverses as they pass away from the influence of one pole to that of the next. CONSTRUCTION :- DC motor consist of rotor mounted winding and stationary winding.In all DC motors , except permanent magnet motors, current must be conducted to the armature winding by passing current through carbon brushes that slide over a set of copper surfaces called a commutator , which is mounted on the rotor.The commutator bars are soldered to armature coils. The brush/ commutator combination makes a sliding switch that energize particular portion of the armature, based on the position of the rotor. This process creates north and south magnetic poles on the rotor that are attracted to or repelled by north and south poles on the stator, which are formed by passing direct current through the field winding. This magnetic attraction and repulsion that causes the rotor to rotate. ADVENTAGES OF DC MOTORS :- DC motors provide excellent speed control for acceleration and deceleration with effective and simple torque control. The fact that the power supply of a DC motor connects directly to the field of the motor allows for precise voltage control, which is necessary with speed and torque control applications.DC motors perform better than AC motors on most traction equipment. They are also used for mobile equipment like golf carts, quarry and mining equipment. DC motors are conveniently portable and well suited to special applications, such as industrial tools and machinery that is not easily run from remote power sources. SERIES MOTOR DIAGRAM The series motor provides high torque and is able to move very large shaft loads when it is firet energized.From the diagram we can see that the field winding in the motor is wired in series with the armature winding.This is the attribute that gives the series motor its name. Since the series field winding is connected in series with the armature, it will carry the same amount of current that passes through the armature. For this reason the field is made from heavy-gauge wire that is large enough to carry the load. Since the wire gauge is so large, the winding will have only a few turns of wire. In some larger DC motors, the field winding is made from copper bar stock rather than the conventional round wire used for power distribution. The square or rectangular shape of the copper bar stock makes it fit more easily around the field pole pieces. It can also radiate more easily the heat that has built up in the winding due to the large amount of current being carried. The amount of current that passes through the winding determines the amount of torque the motor shaft can produce. Since the series field is made of large conductors, it can carry large amounts of current and produce large torques. For example, the starter motor that is used to start an automobiles engine is a series motor and it may draw up to 500 A when it is turning the engines crankshaft on a cold morning.. The series motor can safely handle large currents since the motor does not operate for an extended period. In most applications the motor will operate for only a few seconds while this large current is present. OPERATION OF SERIES MOTOR Operation of the series motor is easy to understand. The field winding is connected in series with the armature winding. This means that power is applied to one end of the series field winding and to one end of the armature winding (connected at the brush). When voltage is applied, current begins to flow from negative power supply terminals through the series winding and armature winding. The armature is not rotating when voltage is first applied, and the only resistance in this circuit will be provided by the large conductors used in the armature and field windings. Since these conductors are so large, they will have a small amount of resistance. This causes the motor to have a large amount of current from the power supply. When the large amount of current starts to flow through the field and armature windings, it produces a strong magnetic field . Since the current is so large, it will cause the coils to reach saturation, which will produce the strongest magnetic field possible. OPERATING CHARACTERSTIC OF DC SERIES MOTOR Ø SPEED CURRENT CHARACTERSTIC. Ø TORQUE CURRENT CHARACTERSTIC. Ø SPEED TORQUE CHARACTERSTIC. SPEED CURRENT CHARACTERSTIC :- The mmf due to the exciting coils increases in direct proportion to the line or armature current, so the value of flux varies with the load current according to the magnetization curve.Due to the larger current the magnetic circuit gets saturated and flux à ¡Ã‚ ¶Ã‚ ² tends to approach a constant value. From the speed equation , the speed is proportional to the back emf Eb and inversely proportional to the flux per pole à ¡Ã‚ ¶Ã‚ ².With the increase in armature current voltage drop in armature circuit and series field [ I(Ra+Rse)] increases and back emf Eb decreases. Torque current characterstic :- Torque is directly proportional to the product of flux per pole à ¡Ã‚ ¶Ã‚ ² and armature current Ia.Upto saturation point flux is proportional to field current and hence to the armature current, because Ia=If. After saturation point flux à ¡Ã‚ ¶Ã‚ ² is independent of the excitation current and so that the current is proportional to the armature current i.e. T ÃŽ ± Ia .So the characterstic becomes a straight line.The useful torque is less than the total torque developed.This is due to torque lost in iron and friction and windage losses. SPEED TORQUE CHARACTERSTIC :- The speed torque characterstic also known as mechanical characterstic, sharply falls with the increasin torque for smaller value of load. But at higher load, the speed drops linearly but slowly with increasing torque. Hence series motors are best suited for services where the motor is directly coupled to the load such as fanswhose speed falls with the increase in load torque. SPEED CONTROL OF DC MOTOR There is two method of speed control i.e. armature voltage control and flux control method. The voltage control can be from a variable voltage source like Ward-Leonard arrangement or by the use of series armature resistance. Unlike the starting conditions the series resistance has to be in the circuit throughout in the case of speed control. That means that the energy is lost in these resistors.These resistors must be adequately cooled for continuous operation. The variable voltage source on the other hand gives the motor the voltage that is needed by it and the losses in the control gear is a minimum. This method is commonly used when the speed ratio required is large, as also the power rating. Field control or flux control is also used for speed control purposes. Normally field weakening is used. This causes operation at higher speeds than the nominal speed. Strengthening the field has little scope for speed control as the machines are already in a state of saturation and large fie ld mmf is needed for small increase in the flux. Even though flux weakening gives higher speeds of operation it reduces the torque produced by the machine for a given armature current and hence the power delivered does not increase at any armature current. The machine is said to be in constant power mode under field weakening mode of control. constant flux mode with increased applied voltage can be used. For weakening the field, series resistances are used for shunt as well as compound motors. In the case of series motors field weakening is done by the use of diverters .Diverters are resistances that are connected in parallel to the series winding to reduce the field current without affecting the armature current. BRAKING OF DC MOTOR When a motor is switched off it coasts to rest under the action of frictional forces.Braking is employed when rapid stopping is required. The electric braking may be done for various reasons such as :- 1. To augment the brake power of the mechanical brakes. 2. To save the life of the mechanical brakes. 3. To regenerate the electrical power and improve the energy efficiency. 4. In the case of emergencies to step the machine instantly. 5. To improve the through put in many production process by reducing the stopping time. In many cases electric braking makes more brake power to the braking process where mechanical brakes are applied. This reduces the wear and tear of the mechanical brakes and reduces the frequency of the replacement of these parts. By recovering the mechanical energy stored in the rotating parts and pumping it into the supply lines the overall energy efficiency is improved. This is called regeneration. Where the safety of the personnel or the equipment is at stake the machine may be required to stop instantly. Basically the electric braking involved is simple. The electric motor can be made to work as a generator by suitable terminal conditions and absorb mechanical energy. This converted mechanical power is dissipated/used on the electrical network suitably. Braking can be broadly classified into: 1. Dynamic 2. Regenerative 3. Reverse voltage braking or plugging These are now explained briefly with reference to shunt ,series and compound motors. DYNAMIC BRAKING †¢ SHUNT MACHINE In dynamic braking the motor is disconnected from the supply and connected to a dynamic braking resistance RDB. This is done by changing the switch from position 1 to 2 . The supply to the field should not be removed. Due to this rotation of the armature during motoring mode and due to the inertia, the armature continues to rotate. An emf is induced due to the presence of the field and the rotation.This voltage drives a current through the braking resistance. The direction of this current is opposite to the one which was flowing . Thereforethe torque produced is reversed. The machine acts like a brake. The torque speed characteristics separate by excited shunt of the machine under dynamic braking mode for a particular value of RDB. The positive torque corresponds to the motoring operation. The dynamic braking of a shunt excited motor and the corresponding torque-speed curve.The machine behaves as a self excited generator.Below a certain speed the self-excitation collapses and the bra king action becomes Zero. †¢ SERIES MOTOR In the case of a series machine the excitation current becomes zero as soon as the armature is disconnected from the mains and hence the induced emf also vanishes. In order to achieve dynamic braking the series field must be isolated and connected to a low voltage high current source to provide the field.The motor is made to work like a separately excited machine. When several machines are available at any spot, as in railway locomotives, dynamic braking is feasible. Series connection of all the series fields with parallel connection of all the armatures connected across a single dynamic braking resistor is used in that case. †¢ COMPOUND GENERATOR In the case of compound machine, the situation is similar to shunt machine. A separately excited shunt field and the armature connected across the braking resistance are used.A cumulatively connected motor becomes differentially compounded generator and the braking torque generated comes down. If large braking torques are desired.there is necessary to reverse the series field REGENERATIVE BRAKING In regenerative braking as the name suggests the energy recovered from the rotating masses is back into the d.c. power source. Thus this type of braking improves the energy efficiency of the machine. The armature current can be made to reverse for a constant voltage operation by increase in speed/excitation only. Increase in speed does not result in braking and the increase in excitation is feasible only over a small range, which may be of the order of 10 to 15%. Hence the best method for obtaining the regenerative braking is to operate the machine on a variable voltage supply. As the voltage is continuously pulled below the value of the induced emf the speed steadily comes down. The field current is held constant by means of separate excitation. The variable d.c. supply voltage can be obtained by Ward-Leonard arrangement. Braking torque can be obtained right up to zero speed. PLUGGING The third method for braking is by plugging. method of connection for the plugging of a shunt motor. Initially the machine is connected to the supply with the switch S in position number 1. If now the switch is moved to position 2, then a reverse voltage is applied across the armature. The induced armature voltage E and supply voltage V aid each other and a large reverse current flows through the armature. This produces a large negative torque or braking torque. Hence plugging is also termed as reverse voltage braking. The machine instantly comes to rest. If the motor is not switched off at this instant the direction of rotation reverses and the motor starts rotating the reverse direction. This type of braking therefore has two modes i.e. 1) plug to reverse and 2) plug to stop. If we need the plugging only for bringing the speed to zero, then we have to open the switch S at zero speed. Plugging is a convenient mode for quick reversal of direction of rotation in reversible drives.During plugging it is necessary to limit the current and the torque, to reduce the stress on the mechanical system and the commutator. This is done by adding additional resistance in series with the armature during plugging. †¢ SERIES MOTOR In the case of series motors plugging cannot be employed as the field current is reversed when reverse voltage is applied across the machine. This keeps the direction of the torque produced unchanged. This fact is used with advantage, in operating a d.c. series motor on d.c. or a.c. supply. Series motors thus qualify to be called as Universal motors. †¢ COMPOUND MOTOR Plugging of compound motors proceeds on similar lines as the shunt motors. A cumulatively compounded motor becomes differentially compounded on plugging. The mmf due to the series field can over power the shunt field forcing the flux to low values or even reverse the net field. This decreases the braking torque, and increases the duration of the large braking current. To avoid this it may be advisable to deactivate the series field at the time of braking by short circuiting the same. In such cases the braking proceeds just as in a shunt motor. If plugging is done to operate the motor in the negative direction of rotation as well, then the series field has to be reversed and connected for getting the proper mmf. Unlike dynamic braking and regenerative braking where the motor is made to work as a generator during braking period, plugging makes the motor work on reverse motoring mode. As if by magic an e-mail appeared in my inbox inviting me to join my friends on a mystery adventure. I jumped at the chance. It was an opportunity to get away from the office for one whole day and night and from the monotonous tasks that were set before me. My bags were packed and goodbyes to family and friends complete. However, to my great dismay, my rucksack weighed more than my own body weight. Clearly the hair straighteners did not classify as an essential item. It took a long while to rearrange my backpack leaving me flustered wondering how I would ever cope without what I consider essentials! Before setting off my colleagues, Ray and Susan helped to plan our plan our journey; where to go, where to stay and who would take what. We decided to travel from where we lived in Parson Road and make our way to Somerset. It would be a total of ten kilometres there and another ten back. The main aim of the trip was to have fun, and in doing so to de-stress and rid us of the boredom of office life. Bright and early at 6 a.m. we set off from the end of our road to depart on our mission. What an adventure we were to undertake. Our first challenge was to direct ourselves out of the village and to travel south to Somerset. With every step we took I became more and more focused on the need for sustenance and could hardly wait for a pit stop that would be a chance to rest our feet and refuel ourselves before restarting our adventure. Unfortunately, the weather took a turn for the worse and it started to pour with rain. As we walked, I thought of the Duke of Edinburgh expedition I undertook when I was a teenager. I remember how we always used to sing the song Everywhere we go as we hiked. To cheer us up I began singing, as I thought, tunefully but to my dismay, Ray and Susan did not agree and laughed at my voice. So, instead of singing we talked about journeys of our past and other experiences we remembered. However, our first challenge was to get to a bridge but, with the weather conditions worsening, it left us cold, damp and tired. To our great bewilderment the ford prior to the bridge had become very deep. The only way we could cross was to swim. We dipped our feet slowly into the freezing water. It was at least ten metres long and quite deep. I could hardly touch the bottom so I swam quickly so as to avoid being in the cold for too long. We had to cling to our backpacks as they contained our key necessities for life. Thankfully I had not packed my hair straighteners! There we were, three desperate, bedraggled office workers shivering with cold and drenched to the skin. Our bags were laden with water spurting out from all sides. My hair was left frizzy and matted and how I was now in desperate need for my hair straighteners! Ray and I snuggled together for warmth and all of a sudden the unexpected happened. I had always thought of him as a kind man who had always been there for me bu t it was at that moment that I realised that there was something very special between us. We stared into each others eyes, our heads gradually moving closer together until our lips met. It was a very magical moment and changed the whole trip for me and had it not been for Ray, I would not have had the will to go on and would probably have turned back and given up. We were suffering from hunger and dehydration so we decided to attempt our lunch. All our possessions including our lunch were soggy after the swim. We enjoyed our mushy bread sodden with muddy water as if it were the best meal of our life. Amazing how anything would have tasted like sweet nectar at that moment. Our next obstacle was a wood. It was only a matter of trudging through the wood, however, given the recent weather conditions and the evening looming it was not as easy as it may have appeared. We heard sounds of bats and owls creating an eerie atmosphere. Susan was petrified and so ran, as fast as she could to get out of there. We shouted to stop and slow down but she clearly could not hear as she ran into the distance. Ray and I followed carefully behind looking everywhere to find her. Eventually we heard her scream; I was taken aback and clung to Ray for safety. Susan had fallen into a ditch with no obvious way out. How could we save her? Thankfully Ray had a clever suggestion to use our spare clothes to make a line to pull her up. We threw down the line and allowed Susan to grab the other end. Ray and I used all our might to rescue Susan. After a joint struggle Susan was pulled out from the ditch. We felt damp, muddy and exhausted. The thought of sitting at a warm desk now seemed somewhat appealing. After she had recovered we made our way out of the wood and agreed to set up camp for the night earlier than planned. Despite the shortened journey my feet resembled a rasher of bacon and were blistered, battered and bruised. In addition, our backs were suffering from the weight of the backpacks along with our legs. More over, my hair looked atrocious awful but for the first time in my life I could not have cared less. We enjoyed our delicious meal over a stove and hot coffee to end the eventful day. Our day had left us fatigued and shattered so we retired early to bed. I learned a lot over that weekend not just about walking but also about relationships and the necessities of life. I was pleased to build my relationships on with my friends and enjoyed very much their company. Now I know that I would never be able to climb Mount Everest or walk anywhere further than to the next village. However, I know I am dependable in an emergency as is Ray. The once hated office seemed a luxury compared to the shattering and traumatic day we had. I realised that all the things I thought essential items have no longer any relevance in my life. Although I struggled to survive with my static and frizzy hair I soon released the essentials to life are in fact friends and people. After all, thanks to Ray I got through the day overcoming my need for hair straighteners and other necessities. I now know the importance of hair straighteners; they have no significance in my life, so much so that I am getting rid of them! People will have to accept my naturally frizzy hair. If they cannot accept my hair then they cannot accept me. I have learned to accept people for who they are as they will me.

While some may argue that persuasive writing is not strengthen by rhetoric devices but by evidence, I certainly believe that rhetoric devices connect and deliver very strong persuasive writing to an audience. Rhetoric devices, mainly ethos, logos, and pathos, make persuasive writing very effective because they support and strengthen the arguments. Ethos is the art of connecting or appealing to an audience ethically. Both Martin Luther King Jr. and Barbara Jordon are well known and have many supporters; therefore they are very credible, and many people would listen. Hundreds of people come to the speech and thousands more listen to it afterwards; these events, due to the size of the audience, draw more and more supporters. Being well known is very important because it gives a foundation and support to build on. Using facts, logos are very strengthening because it shows how some goals can be achieved. Barbara Jordon use of logos is one of the major reasons why the speech is. A perfect example of this is Barbara Jordon’s All Together Now speech. Being very truthful, Jordon is able to strengthen her argument and appeal to her supports. She shows that democrats have made mistakes and how racial segregation affected her life. She also is able to show that equality, regardless of gender, race, religion, or economic position, is necessary and how is transforms the country as a whole. Martin Luther King, although not as much a Jordon, uses logos to define his speech. Bringing a different view, he is able to convey how life would be better without the segregation. He tells about the dreams he has and says that it is possible to gain. Logos show the facts; however, it is not the strongest element when it comes to persuasion. The most effective of the rhetoric devices, pathos connects deeply to the audience by using emotional characteristics. Because it shows that the speaker knows and experiences what the audience does, pathos gives a very important reason on why the audience should support the speaker. Unlike Barbara Jordon, Martin Luther King uses pathos very efficiently throughout his speech, I Have a Dream. Civil rights activist, MLKJ gives the speech to increase the support for equality. Being segregated against and viewed upon as different, King is easily able to connect to his audience, who are also segregated against and viewed differently. In his dreams, King  tells about his children, however speaking as a whole community, he emotionally expresses that not only his children, but also the children of the audience should be able â€Å"live in a world where they are not judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character†. Using repletion, King shows confidence and how everything he talks about is possible. that Barbara Jordon also uses this technique by asking question and showing, like the audience, she does not know the answer to everything. She also shows this by showing the audience the effects of a national community, where everyone is equal. To sum up, rhetoric devices are crucial elements when it comes to persuasive writing. Ethos, logos, and pathos are examples of rhetoric devices that support and strengthen the arguments being made. Martin Luther King Jr. and Barbara Jordon both use rhetoric devices and are able to create very strong and effective speeches and bring more supports f or their cause.
